Blue Light joins LYFE
Festival goers will experience an even bigger block party as Blue Light drops into this years’ LYFE ’11 on Saturday 19 March, 12pm – 4pm at Linwood Park.
LYFE is a free youth event that has been running for the past 13 years, attracting 7000 people to last years block party. This year an even bigger crowd is expected with the inclusion of Blue Light and a top line up of main artists.
“LYFE ‘11 is gearing up to be the biggest yet” says coordinator Emily Sultan. “A dedicated crew of Linwood youth and their adult supporters have been working around the clock to deliver a day full of music, dance, entertainment , workshops, interactive art workshops, sports, games, food and info stalls”
“There’s a great line up of local youth talent and we’re also pleased to announce this year’s line up of big acts include Reality Chant and MC Silva, Mark Vanilau and Friends plus Merchants of Flow on the main stage. Special guest MCs from Tahu FM and Charlie and Gem from What Now will host the main stage.
Reality Chant Productions released Kings Highway, in June last year. Soulful rasta business, with big bass lines will make for an awesome day in the park. MC Silva's live skills on the mic bring a fresh female flow to hip hop!
Mark Vanilau is a local multi-talented musician and songwriter, was a founding member of Tribalincs, whose style encompassed jazz, soul, gospel and rock. Mark played guitar, keyboard and provided vocals. He has created a solid reputation and constantly writes and performs with other artists.
Merchants Of Flow boast to trade their sounds for your listening pleasure. Originally started as a garage jam band they took influence from reggae artists such as Bob Marley, Katchafire, Kora, Fat Freddy’s Drop, House Of Shem, and The Black Seeds. Currently a 7 piece band, these guys know how to groove.
Bring your friends and whanau and join the youth of Linwood for the time of your life at LYFE ’11 on Saturday 19 March 12 – 4 pm at Linwood Park. There’s something for everyone at LYFE so be sure to check out the different zones:
Blue Light Fun Zone: Test your fitness on the Blue Light obstacle course or witness a mock crash.
Sports Zone: Sign up for the Cheapskates skate competition, shoot some hoops with the Cougars, play touch or volleyball or register for League.
Interactive Art Zone: Check out the urban art workshops, circus skills and stone carving.
White Elephant Chill Zone: A place to hang with sofas, pool tables and DJs, plus have a go on the decks and see if you’ve got what it takes!
Food Zone: Satisfy any hunger pangs with plenty of delicious food stalls to choose from at affordable prices.
Information Zone: Handy information from local groups and organisations to promote their services.
Kidz Zone: Face painting and story telling, a bouncy castle and noddy train rides.
LYFE is a youth development project that supports and celebrates the youth of Linwood, provides an opportunity for information sharing and is proudly supported by the all contributing community groups and organisations, the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board and Ministry of Social Development.

Thousands Flock To LYFE
“It was awesome!’
Thousands of people flocked to LYFE (Linwood Youth Festival Experience) at Linwood Park on Saturday 20 March to enjoy and support local performers, have a go at different sport and recreation activities, get information from stall holders and have something tasty to eat from the many food stalls.
On stage, Te Kura Whakapumau kicked off the entertainment with a 20 strong kapa haka performance followed by non stop music of all kinds for five hours including five piece grunge band Drift and hip hop artists from the Philippine Cultural Group. With nearly 30 have a go activities on offer there was plenty to do on the day. Sport fans were not disappointed as have a go sessions included getting hot tips from the Cougars and Canterbury Bulls plus there was something for everything with senior members from Woolston Bowls teaching the younger generation a thing or two, circus skills with Flying Forest Flying Circus, stone and soap carving and the popular Cheapskates competition.
LYFE is Linwood's most popular annual event and it is extra special because young people take an active role organising, performing and leading activities. It brings the community together for an action packed day, is a great opportunity for fundraising and promoting youth services and it really celebrates youth achievement.
LYFE is made possible thanks to core funding from the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board plus much appreciated support from Eastgate, Tahu FM, Deflux, Chart, Phantom, and Frequency Advertising.
LYFE is a real team effort between local organisations supporting positive youth development including Christchurch City Council, Bluelight Canterbury, Linwood Avenue Community Corner Trust Linwood Resource Centre, White Elephant, Mainz, Sport Canterbury, Chart, YCD, 24/7 youth workers, Family & Community Division of Anglican Care, sport clubs and local young people.
If you have any suggestions for next year's LYFE please contact Diana Saxton, Community Recreation Adviser for Hagley/Ferrymead on 941 6628.
