Thousands Flock To LYFE

“It was awesome!’

Thousands of people flocked to LYFE  (Linwood Youth Festival Experience)  at Linwood Park on Saturday  20 March to enjoy and support local performers, have a go at different sport and recreation activities, get information from stall holders and have something tasty to eat from the many food stalls.

On stage, Te Kura Whakapumau kicked  off the entertainment with a 20 strong kapa haka performance followed by non stop music of all kinds for five hours including five piece grunge band Drift and hip hop artists from the Philippine Cultural Group.  With nearly 30 have a go activities on offer there was plenty to do on the day.  Sport fans were not disappointed as have a go sessions included getting hot tips from the Cougars and Canterbury Bulls plus there was something for everything with senior members from Woolston Bowls teaching the younger generation a thing or two, circus skills with Flying Forest Flying Circus, stone and soap carving and the popular Cheapskates competition.

LYFE is Linwood's most popular annual event and it is extra special because young people take an active role organising, performing and leading activities. It brings the community together for an action packed day, is a great opportunity for fundraising and promoting youth services and it really celebrates youth achievement.

LYFE is made possible thanks to core funding from the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board and Lottery Grants Board plus much appreciated support from Eastgate, Tahu FM, Deflux, 4YP, Phantom and Frequency Advertising

LYFE is a real team effort between local organisations supporting positive youth development including Christchurch City Council, Linwood Resource Centre, White Elephant, Mainz, Sport Canterbury, Chart, YCD, 24/7 youth workers, sport clubs and local young people.

If you have any suggestions for next year's LYFE please contact Diana Saxton, Community Recreation Adviser for Hagley/Ferrymead on 941 6628.
